Why domain names, why not URLs?

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

Domain Names are used to find matching results in the search engine result pages (SERPs).

The reason for domain names is because a domain is the smallest piece of information from a URL that is unique to each Web site on the Internet. This prevents finding false positives that can be generated from similar domains. For example, domain.com versus domain.com.au.

Domain Names also allows us to find all pages that are within a particular domain without having to look for each page individually. On some search engines, searching for individual pages can be problematic because of the way the complete URL is displayed. For example, on MSN and Teoma, if a URL is too long to fit the given space, they add an ellipse to the end of the URL making it impossible to find individual pages.

If you need to report on individual pages or folders, this can be done in the Reports task using filters.
