The search engines you select will depend on many factors like the country you are in, or the markets you are targeting. In some cases, even your top level domain (TLD) can have an affect on what search engines you choose.
Selecting Search Engines for Ranking
Generally you'll want to select the fewest number of search engines that give an accurate picture of your presence on the Internet for your country or target audience. For instance, web site owners in the United States may only want to select Google, MSN, and Yahoo, while leaving all others out. These three search engines make up the largest portion of search traffic on the Internet in the US and receive about 30% each of all the search traffic. You may also want to check your log files to see what search engines are sending traffic to your Web site and target some of these.
Selecting Search Engines for Press Releases
Any search engine with News in the Type column can be selected for tracking press releases. In the Standard edition, tracking press release is limit to those that are posted on your own web site. In the Professional edition, you can create custom reports to track individual press releases and track their performance over time.
Selecting Search Engines for Finding Hijacked Web Pages
Currently, only Google and MSN can be hijacked. Selecting other search engines will not reveal any extra hijacked web pages. If you are interested in finding pages on your web site that have been hijacked, please visit our Audiovisual Learning Center on the web site for a complete video on how to do this.
Selecting All Search Engines
Selecting all the search engines, or using the Active Library, is not recommended and will skew the picture of your overall Internet presence. With too many engines selected, you may think your presence is far greater than it really is -- giving you a false sense of security.
